Female Pedophiles in American Schools - An Analytical Study

Last April, Erin Henton, age 45, a Vice Principal at a Massachusetts high school, was arrested for having sexual relations with three minors.  Her first offenses started in September of last year with one male student, and continued up until her arrest.  All illegal activity took place off school grounds.  Her crimes included sexual intercourse, oral sex, and sending explicit text messages.

Although Henton’s tearfully guilty mugshot seemed to stand alone on the Huff Post-Crime website, her case is not isolated.  Here are six more cases within the past year.

In January 2013, Clarice Lee, age 22, a teacher’s aide in Tucson, Arizona, engaged in four-way sex with a 16-year-old and two 18-year-olds.  Three students were spectating and video taped everything.  This took place in the gymnasium basement during lunch period.

In December 2012, Tonya Flink, a 39-year-old computer technology teacher from Haltom City, Texas, was arrested for having ongoing sexual relationships with four male students within one year.  The boys were between 17 and 18 years old.  She made 850+ phone calls to one student within a few months.  One of her students cohabitated with her, and she later told him that she had a preference for “young Hispanic boys.”  Flink's unlawful behavior all started with her after school tutoring of one victim, and her crimes were on and off campus.  In August 2011, he had to resign from her position.  Before the investigation was conducted, she landed another teaching job, which she soon voluntarily left.

In November 2012, Stephanie Fletcher, age 28, a high school biology teacher had sexual relationships with two 16-year-old male students, which also started with after school help sessions.  One relationship with a victim started during the same year she was married.  She also had an affair with another teacher, resulting in the male teacher taking his jealousy out on one victim in class.  Worse, Mrs. Fletcher threatened to commit suicide if the boys reported her crimes.  The sexual encounters occurred on and off campus, sometimes in the school parking lot.

Earlier, September 2012, Ashley Anderson, age 24, was investigated for her having multiple relationships within a year.  She gave oral sex to two 16-year-old boys, romantically kissed a 17-year-old, and had intercourse with an older, 18-year-old from her math class.  She later had a sexual relationship with the 17-year-old when he approached adulthood, and it continued post-graduation.  She also texted nude pictures of herself to each student.

One month earlier, August 2012, in Shelbyville, Indiana, a middle school teacher was arrested.  Bethany Appleton, age 28, invited students to her house for pizza.  The parties involved alcohol, marijuana, and sex.  Appleton had sex with one of the boys who was 15.  The incidents occurred between April 2011 through May 2012.

In January 2012, Rachel Farrell, age 26, from a Bangor, Pennsylvania high school, was arrested for having sexual relationships with four 17-year-old boys.  She seduced her first student via Facebook, which then escalated to sexual encounters in a motel.  They had sex in other places like a Wal-Mart parking lot.

These seven cases make up a small fraction of the numerous reports of women committing these heinous crimes in recent history.  There are websites with long lists of female sex offenders.  One of them is on World Net Daily.com (WND.com), which displays 13 pages of female pedophiles that are specifically from educational environments.

Gathering Data

While reading the list from World Net Daily, I noticed reoccurring facts that I could compile into a database.  I recorded the offender’s name, age, when they were caught, how many victims; victims’ gender and age.  The database does not include all the offenders on the WND.com list, because some of the criminals’ entries did not have all the information I needed, and if I found conflicting information from other sources, then I did not add them.  Moreover, the database only includes offenders who targeted underage students.  The only exception is if there were multiple students and the age range included adult teenagers.  The perpetrator could have begun the exploitation before the student reached adulthood.  The date when the perpetrator was caught is determined by date of arrest, when they were charged, or career resignation.  Court indictments, arraignments, and sentences come after the point when the abuse ended.

All my raw data is at the bottom of this entry, which includes the offenders from the WND.com website, and all seven of the previously mentioned perpetrators.  This database not only includes teachers, but also teacher’s aides, assistant principals, bus drivers, substitute teachers, etc.  On the victims’ age section, there are abbreviations for High School (HS) and Middle School (MS).  They are headed with a question mark since the age is unknown, but they were students of the school where the perpetrator taught.

Results

From the newly created database, I generated statistics regarding dates of arrest, ages of the offenders and victims, victim gender, and number of victims per case.  Having more than 200 cases to examine is a great sample, though it is not a complete record of reported cases, such as an annual report from a police station, region, or a national collection of data.  My database only covers the cases on the WND website and the seven aforementioned criminal situations.

Arrests per year

The arrests date back as early as 1993, however there could have been more cases from the 1990s or earlier that were not featured on WND.com.  Moreover there may have been more cases in 2012 that were not revealed or did not get enough media attention.  This year has not ended, so the number of arrests represents how many known incidents America has had so far.  Table 1 shows a how many arrests were made, broken down by each year.  Chart 1 gives a visual for the growth and possible decline of arrests over time.  The peak years for this category of sexual offenses were 2007-2009.  Either schools have become better at screening their applicants, or there are cases yet to be reported.

Table 1

Chart 1

Perpetrator Age

The average female sexual predator within a school is 31 or 32 years old.  The most common age is 28, the mode.  The youngest was 19, and the oldest was 60.  This is from Table 2.1, which also gives the quartile values.  Originally, I intended to create box and whisker plots, but I decided to use that chart only for the age differences, which you will find later in this blog entry.  Table 2.2 shows a breakdown of the number of predators by age.  Although the highest occurring age is 28, 33 is a close second.

Table 2.1

Table 2.2

I sorted the offenders’ ages into increments of five, except for the first range, 19-24, in order to accommodate the youngest age.  The age groups go clockwise on the pie chart in Chart 2.  The majority of offenders are between the ages of 25-34.  Although the cases perpetrated by an older women make up 12%, (ages 40-60), this shows these scenarios do exist, and occur almost as often as the youngest age group, 19-24; 13%.  The most common age per group is as follows:  24 (19-24), 28 (25-29), 33 (30-34), 37 (35-39), 40 (40-44), 45 (45 and older).

Chart 2

Victim Age

The average age of a victim is 15, and the mode is 17.  The youngest victim was 9, and the oldest was 17, since this study only includes underage students.  These statistics and more are in Tables 3.1-3.3.  Chart 3 displays the percentages of juveniles offended by age, rather than age group.  The only groupings are for 12 and Under, and Age Unknown.  The reason why age is often unreported is to protect the victim’s identity.  Though reports indicate that the student attended the school where the offender worked, which reveals school level; high school, middle school, or elementary school.  Chart 4 shows the school levels for the victims whose ages were not reported.  The school level gives an idea of the victim’s age range.  There was only one instance where a victim’s age level could not be determined.  The boy went to a Middle School-High School composite, and sources only identified him as a minor.

Chart 3

Chart 4

Table 3.1

Table 3.2

Table 3.3

In Chart 3, the portion of victims below the age of 16 is 35%.  If the proportions within the Age Unknown section from Chart 4 are added, this value becomes 40.67%.  The portions on the Unknown sections include Elementary and Middle School, but not High School because the proportion of 14 or 15 year old students is undetermined.  Of the confirmed ages, 54% were high school students.  (This includes ages 15-17, since 14 can be a middle school age.)  If the High School portion of Chart 4 is added to the value, it becomes 71.67%, which is adding confirmed ages (15-17) and unconfirmed high school ages, then dividing by total number of victims.

In Chart 4, the majority of victims were high school aged.  Still, over one fifth were still in middle school.  Although rare, there are cases of elementary students being sexually exploited by school faculty.

The total number of offenders and victims are in the following table.

Table 4

According to an MSNBC news report, 90% of all school related sex crimes are committed by male faculty.  Male teachers make up 23% of the teacher demographics.  I compiled data on 230 female pedophiles, the number of male teacher predators should be around 2,070.

Difference in Age

Even if a student is 18 years old, a teacher is prohibited from having any relationship beyond a professional one.  As I gathered data, I found the age differences appalling at times.  A middle aged woman having a sexual affair with a fourth grader is very sick.  I was curious to know the statistics regarding the difference in age between the offender and the victim(s).  Some offenders molested multiple juveniles, so the perpetrators’ ages are repeated to compare to their individual victims.  If a victim was identified only by their grade level, then the median of the two age numbers normally associated with that grade are accounted.  (For instance, the teacher sexually assaulted a 6th grade boy.  Then he would probably be 11 or 12 years old; the median is 11.5.)  This is the only instance where the age is guessed, since the age is within a year’s difference.

In Chart 5, only the confirmed ages are accounted.  All the perpetrators in my database have confirmed ages, but the victims have unknown ages, which means only 77% of victims are accounted in this chart, and not all perpetrators are covered since they exploited a child with an unreported age.

Chart 5

Table 5 shows the statistics that Chart 5 consists of.  The average difference in age is about 16 years, meaning the average female sex offender is old enough to be the victim’s teenage mother.  The minimum difference is four years, which would seem comfortable between consenting adults in which neither holds authority over the other.  However this scenario was between a 20-year-old faculty member and a 16-year-old boy.  The biggest difference in age was 46 years.  This incident involved a 60-year-old woman and a 14-year-old boy.

Table 5

Number of Victims per Case

The majority of school incidents of sexual abuse involved only one victim.  Though 16% of cases involved more than one youth corrupted by one criminal.  Chart 6 shows the percentages.  Table 6 shows how many cases per section of the pie chart.  The maximum number of victims by one teacher was eight.  Two cases involved 5 students, and six cases involved 4 students.

Chart 6

Table 6

Victim Gender

Although most of the youths corrupted by their teachers were male, there have been cases where teachers and other faculty have engaged in lesbian relations with students.  There have been a few cases where the victims were a mix of males and females.  Gender is also a factor that tends not to be disclosed along with age in order to protect the child’s identity.  Within that section, it is unknown how many males or females would be added to the blue and pink portions of the chart.  Chart 7 shows the portions.  Table 7 displays the numbers for each gender.

Chart 7

Table 7

Making and Breaking Stereotypes

Usually when a person hears the word, “pedophile,” male images come to mind.  People think of Jerry Sandusky, a sickly Catholic priest, or an online creeper.  The stereotype of a pedophile is a 45-year-old man who is partially bald, wearing a pizza-stained white T-shirt that covers most of his beer gut.  When a person mentions a child molester, the attitude is “Let’s get him!  However, most people do not imagine that the pedophile might be a “she.”  No one takes into account that the molester might have been female, let alone a beautiful, long haired teacher in her late twenties.  Some of these female sex offenders look like models and are capable of attracting men their own age, but whether it is loneliness or some other critical factor, they seek youths for sexual companionship.  Still, there are female sexual predators who are older, overweight, and/or unsightly.

Positive Reactions

While some people see female predators as equally immoral as their male counterparts, there are ignorant people who forgive them just for being pretty.  They also do not consider consenting victims to be real victims, regardless of sexual consent laws.  During this project, I found websites with people making encouraging statements in the comment sections, cheering in message boards, and even a blog that rates the attractiveness of female teacher pedophiles.  Here are examples from three websites.

On TheChinese.com, a message board starts with an article of Debra Lafave’s scandal, and the user who started the thread stated, “she’s lucky but not as lucky as the 14 year old..”  (Grammar mistakes are included.)  All the comments on the page were in favor of the perpetrator.  Comments included, “Lucky bastard,” and “I really don’t think she’s guilty at all no matter what.”

There was another listing of female sex offenders on LawFirms.com, which had a mix of positive and negative comments at the bottom.  Favoring comments included, “I would have loved to be ‘abused’ by a hot teacher when I was 15,” “don’t get it – there all pretty good looking wish my teacher was like that lol…,” and a rant headed with the subject, “These Teachers Did Not Committed Any Crimes.”  (All grammar errors are included in these comments.)  Another comment’s subject was “All Of You People Are Judging!!”  That commentator basically said we should think about our own bad deeds before judging these female teacher predators.  Would that person say that if the pedophile were male?

There is a blog titled, “Hormone High” that has an entry, “Gallery of the Sex-Ed Stars.”  This page glorifies the women’s crimes and gives a “Hotness Rating” for each teacher.  The entry has 18 pedophile teachers.  In the comments section, one agreeing reader gave a link to “free teen porn.”  This shows that at least one sympathizer to female pedophilia is also in favor of child pornography.

A New Type of Sexism

Instead of seeing a break in the stereotype, sympathizers give the female pedophile her own stereotype, a positive one.  They see her as a beautiful seductress and they commend her for “making him [male student] into a man.”  If a man sexually abuses a teenager, he is demonized by society, but if the predator has a uterus, she is glamorized.  Pamela Smart’s pedophilia and mariticide case was the inspiration to the film, “To Die For,” starring Nicole Kidman.  How would people feel if the Jerry Sandusky case was made into a movie, starring the handsome Sean Connery?

Judges give lighter sentences for female molesters than male ones.  In Cameo Patch’s trial, the judge, Mark Kouris, admitted, “If this was a 29-year-old male and a 17-year-old female, I would be inclined to order some incarceration.”  While going through all the stories about these pedophile women, I noticed a lot of them either had light sentences or no jail time.  There were some exceptions, such as the guiltless Stephanie Ragusa who had gotten 10 years in prison.

If a man commits child molestation, people want to castrate him and subject him to medieval torture, but if a woman does the same, exact crime, suddenly it’s okay for her to sexually manipulate a schoolboy?  It seems like some parts of society want to protect her while retaining the stereotype against males alone.  These people claim to hate pedophiles, but only the ugly ones.  Is society condemning a crime or poor physical appearance?

Reasons for Positive Reactions

Why do these strange people “hate” pedophiles then hypocritically support female pedophiles in the same breath?  Why do some people put female pedophilia in a positive light?  Here are some conclusions I have drawn.

1.  Ugliness is more threatening than prettiness.
The monsters in a child’s nightmare are ugly, causing the dreamer to want to run away.  Princesses in fairytales are supposed to be saved.  Receiving unwanted sexual advances from someone physically undesirable is very threatening.  Beauty is glamorous.  People want beautiful people and things in their lives.  Though, whatever happened to inner beauty?  Why can’t people see past the pretty façade?  If a female molester has long, blonde hair and sparkling, blue eyes, she is still a molester, but not to the sympathizers.  If that same predator were 300lbs, had gray teeth, bad breath, thick glasses, hair laced with dandruff, and were 45 years old, I think these sympathizers would recognize her as a criminal rather than a sex goddess.

2.  A large portion of the victims were obliging males.
I regret not compiling how many of the students were consenting or forced.  Through observation, I noticed many of the students were obliging/consenting victims.  Most people would immediately think of boys, but girls were also obliging victims.  In Abigail Holloway’s case, her 13-year-old female victim called their relationship, “A Gift from God.”  Females make up 11% of the victims, but still more obliging victims were male.
The problem is that some people do not believe in “consenting victims” or the legal age of consent.  They think, “Well he wanted it,” or “But he said yes,” as acceptable excuses to have sex with an underage person.  The age of consent varies by state, and at the federal level, the age is 18.  The lowest age of consent for a state is 16.
Lots of men reminisce of their youth when all they could think about was girls and sex.  Just because boys want to have sex doesn’t make it alright for a grown, mentally developed woman to take advantage of the boy’s high libido and the easiness to get sex out of him.  She should not be using him to alleviate her marital problems.

3.  The victims were mostly teenagers nearing adulthood.
If a female predator were having sex with a 6-year-old, people would be sickened and realize her actions were wrong.  However, since the victims are mostly compliant, and very close to 18, it makes her not seem as bad.  She is not attracted to little kids, just the big kids.  That is still sounds gross.
The proper term for most of these cases is Ephebophilia.  An ephebophile is a type of pedophile that is only attracted to adolescents.  Since minors are legally regarded as children, pedophile would still be an acceptable label.

Why Female Pedophilia is Wrong, and Why It Should Not Be in the Classroom.

There are plenty of reasons why these crimes are so wrong, but here are a few.

1.  Teachers and students are not equals.
A person in a position of authority has more power than the subordinate.  The authority figure has control.  In a romantic relationship, both partners should be equals to one another, so every situation is fair.  Even if this were a college setting between a professor and an adult student, the student would still be at a disadvantage, because the professor has control over grading.

2.  School is an educational institution, not a brothel.
School is a place where a student learns, expands his/her horizons, and explores abilities and talents.  For the teacher, school is a workplace.  A teacher is there specifically to do his/her job.  It is not a dating service.  A child legally has a right to an education, and legally is enforced to attend.  Everyday when this student comes to school, the predator is there.  Even if it is a consenting victim, he/she is too sexually distracted to learn.  The student’s right to an education is then altered.

3.  This affects the student’s still-developing mind.
Even at age 18, the mind is still developing and learning to make decisions.  The pedophile is a grown adult has an unfair advantage developmentally.  She has experience in decision making and should know better than to tamper with a child’s mind.  In one case, a 17-year-old boy later said he was scarred by his relationship with his teacher.
While a teenage boy is caught up in the whirlwind of emotions and hormones, he loses out on the discoveries he would have made if he were not sexually involved with an academician.  If he were not mentally immersed in his sexual feelings during class, maybe he would have learned more, discovered his talents, and realized what he really wanted to do with his life.  According to the YouTube video, “040, This is Why Female Pedophiles Get a Pussy Pass,” male victims tend to have relationship problems later on in life due to the sexual relationship with a teacher.  If these crimes never occurred, the boys would grow up to be different people and have happier love lives.

4.  A person’s first sexual experience could have been with someone better.
To be touched for the first time seems magical to a boy of budding maturity.  To the mind, skin is skin and flesh is flesh.  To him, it does not matter who as long as he wants it.  Though, why should he not have these feelings for a girl in his age group, or with someone he meets in college, or the love of his life?  Why waste the first good feelings on an older woman who just wants a little meaningless fun?  Maybe she wants to liven her life in the midst of her marriage doldrums.  Perhaps she has a lot of personal and mental problems, or is just a sickly pervert who wants to take advantage of a schoolboy who is partially matured.

A crime is a crime, whether it is committed by a man or woman, pretty or ugly.  A child is a child, boy or girl – it does not matter.

The Real Threat

Obliging victims of childhood sexual abuse are mentally stuck at the age when the abuse occurred.  If their agreement with the foul treatment continues into adulthood, then it is possible the victim will try to replicate the experience onto another child, thinking it is okay.  There is the mentality that, “It was a good experience for me, then it should not be a bad experience for the next person.”  My resource on this notion is from personal communication with a coworker who previously worked as a corrections officer in a New Jersey prison for sex offenders.

Considering 78% of the victims were male, and a large portion was compliant, those victims may grow up to be the sleazy, online sexual predators from people’s stereotypical imaginations.  If we stop sexual abuse within our schools, maybe the number of male predators in the future could be reduced.
